listserv stupidity!
So, a while back, FIU switched over to gmail, ditching the Mirapoint email system they'd previously paid 11 megabucks. Mirapoint sucked. They were chosen not on technical merit, but by the sole fact that they were willing to provide FIU a system for exactly 11M.

That system was pathetic, but at least it provided imap access.

Anyway. Some time after the switch over to gmail, us engineering students first got notices from advising and faculty from this "students" list. Eventually, we also started to get stupid nightclub flyers from this "students" list. There appears to be no way to unsubscribe, or anything, and the advisors and faculty no longer appear to be in control of this list. Supposedly, it was controlled by our old advisor who left, then turned over to some douchebag friend of his who works as a nightclub promoter...

Eventually, we started all getting V1@GR4 spam from this list, which seemed suspicious. Originally, posting was only open to the faculty, advisors, and douchebag club guy...

One night I sent a test message to that list, just to see what'd happen. Bam, Velveeta. Nasty fake cheese everywhere!

... Unfortunately, this opened the floodgates. Everyone in the engineering department got my test message, and realized that it works that way. Now there's even more spam and stupid commentary!

Someone said they're complaining to UTS about the thing. Unfortunately, I don't know what they can do about it; I traced the thing out by headers and Spamcop, and found it's spewing from a server in China. What the ----???

FIU: Your Tuition At Work. Would you like some spiced canned pork and ham?

Yeah.. what gets me most is they appeared to have outsourced running that list to someone who hangs it off a Chinese server.

Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. And here I was thinking that IT incompetency was the sole bastion of the corporate sector. *roll*

I don't know what we're using now at my job behind the Outlook 2007 clients, but at the same time we got those we also got VNC servers sneakily installed on all of the office client computers. Fortunately, the IT guy forgot to make control of it admin-only, so I just disabled it with msconfig.

Ha. Was that for remote support, or as part of a shitty monitoring system?

I've seen vnc used for remote monitoring in the old MDC library before... I'd sometimes go in when nobody was using the computers and their monitors were in sleep mode. I'd wake up the computers, hit goatse, turn off the monitors, and leave... watching the guy at the library monitoring desk go scrambling to go de-goatse the computers with a disgusted look on his face.

THIS IS BEAUTIFUL. I'd move to sue the school for damages. :P

I get enough spam from student action groups, hard for me to imagine for you. Though, the gmail e-mails are good. We have Davismail, which is currently running off of gmail. Pretty nice.
